IHS Presents “Before There Was Inlet”

For its first program of the summer season, the Inlet Historical Society presents “Before There Was Inlet” at 7 p.m. Thursday Evening on June 23 in the Inlet Town Hall at Arrowhead Park.
Charles Herr will discuss the lives, plans and hopes of the notable owners of the lands of Inlet before settlers’ transportation and civic needs resulted in the township’s separation from Morehouse in 1902.
The territory’s owners included the original namesake of Sagamore Lake, a founder of Port Leyden whose family is buried with Lyons in Brooklyn and a famous mathematician who traveled the Adirondacks for 20 years beginning in the 1830s, owned all of Raquette Lake and determined the height of Mt. Marcy confirmed 30 years later by Verplank Colvin in the 1870s.
Also, learn what is inaccurate about the statutory boundary of the Town of Inlet as defined by state law in 1902. If your curiosity is piqued and want to know who these landowners were, as well as what Inlet’s land might have become if their plans had come to fruition, please attend on Wednesday evening June 23.
As with all Society programs, members and non-members alike are invited. If you need directions, please contact Inlet Tourism Office at 315-357-5501.
